Red Breast Tasting
Redbreast is a pure pot still whiskey Irish Whiskey. The only consistently available expression is a 12-year although a 15 year old expression was released in 2010 as an ongoing bottling. Redbreast comes in a green bottle and the 12 year old is 40.0% ABV (80 proof) whereas the 15 year old is at 46% and non-chill filtered. It is produced at the New Midleton Distillery. Redbreast is one of only two pure pot still whiskey brands produced today (along with Green Spot) and the only one with an age statement. In 2010, Redbreast 12 was awarded Irish Whiskey of the Year by whiskey writer, Jim Murray, and was also nominated as #1 buy in John Hansell's Buyer's Guide, picking up a score of 96 points.
Redbreast 12 yr
Full of Aroma and Flavour, the 12 year benefits from a strong contgriubution from distillates which have matured on Oloroso shery casks, giving it its trademark Christmas cake character. The nose is complex and spicy with a fruity aroma with a touch of toasted wood notes. The taste if full flavored and complex; a harmonious balance of spicy, creamy, fruity, sherry, and toasted notes. The finish is satusfyingly long and complex.
After the sucess of the 12 year, they decided to grace our palats with the cask strength. At 57.7% it is suprisingly pleasant. The sherry still comes throught with a touch of spice and vanilla on the nose. The palate is viscus with a nice fireyness that is dominated by dark fruits, chocolate, and a tannic wood. The finish is not too long and fades away gracefully.
Redbreast 15 yr
All the characteristics of Redbreast 12 but delivered in a more intense fashion. The extra years spent in both Sherry and Bourbon cask, and the fact that it is bottled at 46% abv, contribute to a wonderfully powerful taste experience. The nose if fruity and tangy with a touch of citrus and tropical fruits. The palate is creamy, smooth, with cooked fruits, buterschotch, and caramel. The finish is long and hot and a little metallicy.
